ICL Surgery

ICL surgery is an FDA approved vision corrective surgery to treat myopia (Nearsightedness) and astigmatism. This is a lens surgically implanted inside of the eye between the iris (the colored part of the eye) and the eye’s natural lens. Almost like implanting a contact lens that never requires daily replacement or cleaning like a regular contact lens.

ICL is unlike laser refractive surgery, like LASIK or PRK, which reshapes the cornea to clearly refocus light to the retina. ICL surgery leaves the ocular structures unchanged, and the ICL lens refocuses light to clearly hit the retina. Both laser surgery and refractive surgery are intended to improve vision in patients with myopia and astigmatism.

Good candidates for ICL surgery are between the ages of mid-20’s and mid-40’s who are not good candidates for laser refractive surgery due to:

  • Insufficient corneal thickness for LASIK or PRK

  • Corneal shape that is too flat for LASIK or PRK

  • Prescription is greater than -7.00D, regardless of corneal thickness

  • Dry eye patients that desire refractive surgery

  • Family history of certain corneal disease

Prescriptions up to -20.00 can be successfully treated with ICL Surgery. To be a candidate for ICL surgery you should:

  • Have a stable prescription for at least one year

  • Have a healthy eye

  • Be somewhere between 22 and 45 years old

What to Expect During the Surgery

  • You will need someone to drive you home from the surgery

  • After numbing and dilating your eyes, the surgeon will make a very small incision at the edge of your cornea

  • They’ll fold and insert the lens into the incision and adjust it behind the iris and in front of your lens

  • Because the incision is so small, you probably won’t even need stitches afterwards

  • The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes for both eyes

  • Both eyes are typically done at the same time

With over 500,000 cases and over 1 million lenses inserted, researchers have reported that 95% of people with this surgery are satisfied or very satisfied with their results. Recovery time is typically just a couple of days and most people return to most regular activities right away. Complete visual improvement may take up to ten days. You will have a number of medicated drops to use for the first few weeks. Follow up appointments are usually:

  • The Next Day

  • After One Week

  • After Three Months

  • Annual eye exam appointments after that
